The Other Brands Worth Buying Second Hand |
Barker and Stonehouse and Oak Furniture Land are the regulars here, but good furniture doesn’t only come from two makers. This collection is where everything else worth having ends up, and some of my favourite finds have come through it.
What lands here? John Lewis pieces, which are usually better made than their price ever suggested. Next and Dunelm furniture from their solid ranges, the stuff that surprises people who assumed high street meant flimsy. Halo, whose leather and hardwood pieces age like they enjoy it. And every so often an Ercol piece comes through, a name still making proper furniture in Britain today, and those make the phone ring within the hour of listing.
Here’s the thing about a mixed collection like this: the brand gets a piece through my door, but only the condition gets it onto the website. I inspect every item personally, whoever made it. Same standard as the premium brands, same honest photographs, same rule that if I wouldn’t have it in my own house, you won’t see it in this shop.
Treat this page like the interesting shelf in a good bookshop. It’s the category to browse when you don’t know exactly what you want yet, because it’s where the one-offs live, and every piece is literally one of one. Prices follow the same logic as everything else here: a fraction of new, sometimes as little as a tenth.
Know the exact brand or piece you’re hunting? Skip the browsing and register it with Sorcit, my free sourcing service. Brand requests are its bread and butter: tell me “Ercol dropleaf” or “John Lewis oak sideboard” and I’ll go looking, then email you the moment it lands. A £30 deposit holds any piece, click and collect is free from Houghton-le-Spring, and delivery runs from my van locally to trusted couriers UK wide.
