Second Hand Oak Furniture: the Wood That Wins Twice |
Three quarters of everything I sell is oak, and that’s not an accident. When you buy and inspect second hand furniture for a living, you learn fast which wood keeps its promises. Oak turns up year after year with its joints tight, its drawers running true and its finish still worth photographing. Other materials audition. Oak gets the job.
Oak is the backbone of what comes through here, second hand and solid. Wardrobes, chests of drawers, sideboards, TV units, bedside cabinets, dining tables, bookcases, dressers. Most of it from Barker and Stonehouse and Oak Furniture Land, whose solid oak ranges are exactly why those two brands dominate my stock.
And I do mean solid. The heartbreak of the furniture world is paying oak money for veneered chipboard, so it’s the first thing I check on every piece: real weight, real grain running over the edges, real wood inside the drawers. If a piece is veneered, the listing says so plainly. Most of what you’ll find here is solid through and through, because that’s what survives long enough to be sold twice.
Now the sums. New solid oak is genuinely expensive, and fair enough: it’s a premium material. But it doesn’t wear out with its first owner, so the second hand price buys you the same decades of service at up to 90% less. A £1,200 wardrobe for a few hundred. A sideboard for less than a flatpack imitation. It’s not a bargain, it’s arithmetic.
Oak does its best work on the big pieces. A solid oak bed frame that will not creak in ten years. A chest of drawers whose runners still glide. A table that takes a whole family and asks for nothing. That is where the saving is biggest, and where the timber matters most.
