Second hand solid oak bookcase with shelves and lower drawers.

Second Hand Bookcases That Don’t Bow Under the Job

Books are heavy. A single metre of paperbacks is around twenty kilos, hardbacks nearer thirty, and that’s the entire story of why cheap bookcases fail. The shelf bows within a year, then the whole thing leans like it’s had a long day. Solid wood shelving doesn’t do that, and solid wood is what this collection is.

The bookcases that pass through are: oak and pine, tall library-style pieces, low two-shelf numbers for under windows, glazed-top designs and open shelving from Barker and Stonehouse, Oak Furniture Land and other makers who understood load-bearing. When I inspect a used bookcase I sight along every shelf for bow and check the back panel is sound, because the back is what keeps the whole piece square. If it’s here, it passed.

A tip if you’re choosing: buy deeper than you think you need. Shelves around 28 to 30cm deep take hardbacks, files and the big art books; the shallow ones commit you to paperbacks forever. Exact dimensions are on every listing.

The savings are almost unfair on this category. Bookcases are mostly material, material is what you’re NOT paying full price for, and a solid oak bookcase that retailed in the high hundreds sits here at a fraction. Up to 90% off on the right day.

One of each, as always. A £30 deposit holds yours. Free click and collect from Houghton-le-Spring, North East delivery by me, couriers UK wide. After a specific height for an alcove or a matching pair for a study? Register it with Sorcit, my free sourcing service, and I’ll email you when it lands.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. First off I don't do reviews, good or bad!! But on this occasion the service was so exceptional that I feel grateful to have stumbled across this small company based in Houghton le Spring in the Nort East and run by Simon. This guy is so fair and helpful, and goes "above and beyond" to make sure his customers are satisfied with their purchase. We bought 2 secondhand wardrobes from DecorDeluxe.club which were exactly as described and arrived in perfect condition, exceptionally clean and almost as new. We live in the North West some 160 miles away but even with the additional carriage costs it was a better deal than we could get locally. It was a pleasure to deal with this company. If you're looking for seconhand, make this your first port of call.
Thank you Simon.
