Oak Furniture Land Shay Range: Almond Grey, Natural Oak, No Longer Made

Shay is the painted one. Almond grey below, natural solid oak on top, and once you have seen that combination you will pick it out of a room from the doorway. It is also gone. Oak Furniture Land have retired it, which means the only Shay left anywhere is Shay that somebody already owns.

And the two tones are not a flourish on a few pieces. They are the entire range. Wardrobes, sideboards, chests, bookcases, bed frames, TV units, right down to a little nest of tables. Painted body, oak top, every time, no exceptions. That is why a roomful of Shay hangs together the way it does, and it is why the people hunting one last piece are so particular about it. They are not after a chest of drawers. They are after that chest of drawers.

Look closer and the detailing holds too. Turned legs that lift the bigger pieces up off the floor so nothing sits there looking heavy. A fine beading line running round the shoulder, just beneath the oak top, framing the painted section. Round handles in a dark brassy metal, warm rather than shiny. Nothing carved, nothing applied, nothing trying too hard.

The tops are left as natural oak, unstained, so the grain and the colour shift across a single board rather than sitting flat and even. Against pale paint, that is precisely the point. One half of the piece is calm. The other half does all the talking.

And the build is Oak Furniture Land being Oak Furniture Land. Solid hardwood carcasses, not MDF with a photograph of wood stuck on the front. Real oak tops. Delivered assembled rather than flatpack. It is the reason a Shay piece is still worth having years after it left the shop, and the reason the ones that reach me arrive solid.

So there is no reordering it. If you are one chest short of a Shay bedroom, or you have moved house and the room needs a piece more, the second-hand market is now the whole market. One thing worth knowing if you go looking: you may still come across Shay pages on Oak Furniture Land’s own website. Pages tend to outlive the ranges they were built for. What counts is what can actually be delivered, and for Shay that means buying it from somebody who already has it.

And this is where I am more careful than usual, because painted furniture is a different proposition. Bare oak hides a knock. Paint does not. A chipped corner, a rubbed edge, a mark on a door front, paint shows you everything it has been through. Which is exactly why the description on a used painted piece has to be exact, so it is. Whatever I find when I inspect a Shay piece goes in the description and goes in the photographs. Every time. If I have not mentioned it, it is not there.

Exactly the condition I have described it in. That is the whole promise, and it is why people come back. Second-hand furniture has had a prior life, and it will show it. But there is a world of difference between a piece that has been lived with and a piece that has been damaged, and my job is to tell you precisely which one you are looking at. If there is a water mark, a scuff, a repair, anything at all worth knowing about, it goes in the description and it goes in the photographs. Every time. So what you should expect is accuracy. Not optimism. Not a generous adjective. Not a photograph shot from the one angle that hides it. If I have not mentioned it, it is not there. With Shay it matters more than most, because it is painted. Paint shows the wear that bare oak quietly hides, so the edges, the corners and the door fronts get gone over especially carefully and whatever is there gets written down. Can you still buy Shay furniture new?

No. Oak Furniture Land have retired the range, so there is no new stock to order. You may still stumble across Shay pages on their website, because pages tend to outlive the ranges they were built for, but second-hand is the route now. How do I know if my furniture is Shay?

Look for the two tones first, because that is the giveaway. A pale almond grey painted body with a natural solid oak top, and that same treatment running across every piece rather than just one or two. Then check three details: turned legs, a fine beading line round the shoulder just beneath the oak top, and round handles in a dark brassy metal. Yes, and Shay is a fair illustration of why. The painted sections are solid hardwood underneath rather than MDF, the tops are real oak, and the whole thing arrives assembled rather than flatpack. Dovetailed drawers, proper backs and runners. Having inspected hundreds of their pieces, that build is why a retired range still turns up here solid and worth selling.

How do I look after painted Shay furniture?

Two finishes, two jobs, and that is the only fiddly part. The oak top wants what oak always wants: a soft dry cloth, a coat of good furniture wax now and again, nothing harsh. The painted sections want less. A damp cloth, a dry one after it, nothing abrasive and absolutely nothing with bleach in it. Keep the whole piece out of long direct sunlight, because the paint will fade and the oak will lighten and they will not do it at the same rate. Away from radiators too, since dry heat is what makes solid timber move. Do that and it will still look right in ten years.
