Second Hand Blanket Boxes: the Most Useful Metre in the Bedroom |
The blanket box might be the most quietly useful piece of furniture ever made. Spare bedding in winter, blankets in summer, and all year round it’s a seat for putting shoes on, a perch for the folded washing and a lid over household chaos. A metre of storage that doubles as furniture. Nothing else in the bedroom multitasks like it.
They come through here in small numbers, a handful at a time, because the good ones are keepers and families hold onto them. Solid oak and pine boxes, panelled traditional designs, the occasional upholstered ottoman. When one arrives it gets the full inspection: hinges sound and safe (a slamming lid is how blanket boxes lose fingers and friendships, so I check for support hinges and say on the listing what’s fitted), base solid, interior clean and dry. That last one matters; a musty box never leaves my warehouse smelling of anything at all, because it never leaves my warehouse.
So here’s how to use this page. If a box is listed below, it’s real, inspected and one of one, and at a fraction of new money it will not hang about. Take it. If the page is looking sparse, register what you want with Sorcit, my free sourcing service: oak or pine, rough length, painted or natural. Blanket boxes turn up steadily through house clearances, and Sorcit members hear first. Every time.
£30 deposit holds a piece, click and collect is free from Houghton-le-Spring, I deliver across the North East, couriers cover the UK. Small category. Big usefulness. First come, first seated.
Most of these end up at the foot of beds, so if the bed needs sorting too, start there.
