Tallboy Drawers: Storage That Goes Up, Not Out |
The tallboy is what happens when a chest of drawers looks at a small bedroom and thinks vertically. Same storage as a wide chest, half the floor eaten. If you’re furnishing a box room, a child’s room or any bedroom where the bed already won the floor war, this is the category that solves it.
The tallboys that come through are, solid oak and pine, five, six and seven-drawer designs, from Barker and Stonehouse, Oak Furniture Land and other makers who build tall things properly. And “properly” matters more with tallboys than any other drawer furniture, because height changes the physics. A well-made tallboy is bottom-heavy by design, with solid sides and a stable base; a cheap one is a wardrobe-shaped wobble. I load-test the top drawers on every one, extended, because that’s the tipping test, and I’d rather fail a piece in the warehouse than in your bedroom. Anchor straps are cheap and sensible with any tall furniture if you’ve little ones around; listings note where fixing points exist.
Beyond the physics, the usual pleasures: dovetailed drawers, real wood tops, finishes from honey oak to painted. And prices at a fraction of new, because a tallboy is one of those pieces almost nobody thinks to buy second hand. Their oversight, your gain.
And a tallboy rarely works alone. It earns its keep beside a wardrobe holding the hanging clothes, in a room anchored by a proper wooden bed frame. All three come through here from the same makers, and all three are measured by me before they go up.
Each one is one of one. £30 deposit holds it, free click and collect from Houghton-le-Spring, North East delivery by me, couriers UK wide. After a specific height, width or wood? Register it with Sorcit, my free sourcing service, and I’ll email you when the right tallboy turns up.
