Alto is the one where the joinery is the decoration. Look at any corner of any Alto piece and there it is: the oak interlocking with itself in a neat row of square teeth. Most furniture hides how it was put together. Oak Furniture Land put Alto’s on the outside and made it the whole point.

And once you have clocked it you will see it everywhere, because it runs right across the range. Wardrobe, sideboard, chest, bedside, bookcase, display cabinet, nest of tables, down to the smallest side table. Same finger joints, same corners, every single piece. It is the fastest way to identify Alto from across a room, and it is why a mixed group of it still reads as a set.

The shapes are deliberately plain. Clean-cut lines. Bold right angles. Thick tops, thick sides, square edges. No carving, no mouldings, no rustic knots being shown off. Where their other ranges reach for character, Alto strips the lot back and lets the timber and the joints do the talking. Minimalist, and genuinely so, rather than minimalist as a word in a brochure.

And it is heavy. Genuinely heavy, in the way that catches people out when they come to shift it. Alto was made from thick solid sections rather than thin panels dressed up to look substantial, so a bedside you would lift one-handed in most ranges takes two hands here. That heft is not a side effect of the design. It is the design. It is why each piece sits planted in a room rather than perched in it, and it is a fair part of why Alto still turns up solid years after lighter furniture from the same era went to the tip.

The finish is a simple clear one over natural oak. No stain, no paint, nothing hiding the grain, which is what keeps a room full of Alto feeling light to look at even though none of it is light to carry. It is also why it has dated so much better than the darkly stained furniture sold alongside it.

And it is solid oak throughout, not veneer over board. Dovetailed drawers. Real oak backs and shelves. Delivered assembled rather than flatpack. Those finger joints are not a styling trick either; interlocking the timber like that is a genuinely strong way to join two boards, which is precisely why they were happy to leave it on show.

Then they stopped making it. Alto has no range page of its own any more, does not appear in the current line-up, and cannot be bought new at any price. Exactly the condition I have described it in. That is the whole promise, and it is why people come back. Second-hand furniture has had a prior life, and it will show it. But there is a world of difference between a piece that has been lived with and a piece that has been damaged, and my job is to tell you precisely which one you are looking at. If there is a water mark, a scuff, a repair, anything at all worth knowing about, it goes in the description and it goes in the photographs. Every time. So what you should expect is accuracy. Not optimism. Not a generous adjective. Not a photograph shot from the one angle that hides it. If I have not mentioned it, it is not there. With Alto the thing to watch is the bare oak. It will not chip the way a painted finish does, but it takes a water ring more readily than most, so tops get gone over carefully and anything there gets written down. How do I know if my furniture is Alto?

Two things give it away, and between them they are conclusive. First, look at the corners. Alto is the Oak Furniture Land range with exposed finger joints, so where the top meets the side you see the oak interlocking in a row of square teeth rather than a clean closed edge, and that detail is on every piece in the range. Second, pick it up, or try to. Alto is chunky and properly heavy, thick solid sections throughout, so if a piece feels light for its size it is not Alto. After that: bold right angles, plain flat door panels with no carving at all, natural unstained oak, and long curved brushed metal handles. If your piece has a painted body with an oak top it is Shay, not Alto. If it is heavily knotted and rugged it is more likely Orrick. Send me a photo if you are unsure and I will tell you.

Can you still buy Alto furniture new?

No. Oak Furniture Land retired Alto, so it is not available new from them or anywhere else. It no longer has a range page and does not appear in the current line-up. Keep it out of long direct sunlight, which lightens unstained oak unevenly, and away from radiators, since dry heat is what makes solid timber move. Nothing abrasive and nothing silicone-based.
