And it happens to be the one Oak Furniture Land range that is still very much on sale, brand new, right now, in one of the biggest collections they make. Which tells you something. You do not need a range to be extinct for it to be worth buying used.

Look at any Orrick piece and go straight to the corners, front and back. They are not sharp. Oak Furniture Land hand-chamfer them, running a soft rounded edge the full height of the piece rather than leaving a hard square edge, so instead of a box with four flat corners you get something that reads as curved all the way up and down, on every side. Add the handles, sculpted rather than stamped flat, and you have the two details that actually identify Orrick before you even check the finish.

And then there is the colour. The rustic finish on Orrick is a warm honey tone, with a matt surface rather than anything glossy or built up. It reads warmer than our lightest oak without tipping into the deep, dark stains some ranges go for. Rustic that still feels bright in a room, not heavy.

How do I look after Orrick furniture?

Straightforwardly, and rarely. A soft dry cloth for dust, a coat of good furniture wax now and then to feed the timber. The rustic finish is forgiving of the odd knock, more forgiving than a painted piece or a glass-smooth polished one, but it is not indestructible. Use mats and coasters, keep it out of long direct sunlight which fades any oak finish unevenly over time, and away from radiators, since dry heat is what makes solid timber move.
