This is the Essence range from John Lewis, built from a combination of solid European oak and oak veneer. The grain runs clean and the colour is that pale natural oak tone that works in everything from a cottage bedroom to a flat-pack free zone. The drawers sit flush with the frame, so the front is a single unbroken surface rather than a set of jutting boxes. The piece lifts off the ground on tapered legs, which means it reads as furniture rather than a beige slab hugging the skirting board. And the hardware does something clever: each drawer gets its own patterned ceramic knob, so there is detail and character without the piece shouting about it.
Open a drawer and you see traditional dovetail joints holding the corners. Those interlocking fingers are the reason a drawer still slides square after five years of daily use, rather than wobbling itself loose like the alternatives you will find on the high street. The edges are rounded smooth and the construction shows care at every join. This is the grade of furniture that was built to stay in service, which is exactly why it is still looking this good second hand.
The condition is second hand and in great condition, with a few honest imperfections. There are some very slight variations in colour across certain areas of the surface, where it appears to be marginally lighter in places. It is possible that this may be due to perfume or a similar product having been applied to the surface at some point. The difference is very subtle and difficult to notice, but I am including it here so you know exactly what you are getting. My second hand price is £145.
