The horizontal slats do it. Both headboard and footboard, each one scooped gently inward like somebody spent real time with a spokeshave. You do not see that shaping on flat-pack beds or even most mass-made frames. It is a detail that costs time, and time costs money, which is why most makers skip it. Barker and Stonehouse did not skip it. I am Simon, and I spend most weeks passing on frames that look fine in photos but feel flimsy in person. This one turned up, I saw those curves, checked the joinery, and it made the cut.
Reclaimed wood, finished in a rich chestnut that catches the light without shouting about it. Every plank brings its own grain, its own knots, its own history written in the timber. That variety is not a compromise. It is the whole reason reclaimed wood costs what it does and looks how it looks. You get texture, warmth, and a bed that does not match any other bed in any other bedroom. The finish is a warm medium brown with a slight gloss, and the natural marks are part of the deal. If you wanted uniform veneer you would be shopping elsewhere.
The construction is proper. Traditional dovetail joints hold the frame together, the kind that tighten over time rather than loosening. Solid splayed legs, slightly angled outward, give the whole thing stability and a handcrafted quality you notice when you move it. No storage underneath, no drawers, no compartments. Just a well-built double bed that does one job and does it honestly.
The condition is PreLoved with a bit of character, minor signs of wear, still in great nick. The imperfections amount to this: natural marks and knots inherent to reclaimed timber, which add to the piece rather than detract from it. You are buying reclaimed wood. It is supposed to show its past.
This bed sold new for £1,050. My price is £275. That is £775 off, 74% below the original retail. You do the maths.
