The doors are clean, solid, no rattling, no warping, just oak doing what oak does. Pull them open and you feel the hinge take the weight without fuss. That is Barker and Stonehouse working at full strength, and this wardrobe is proof of exactly that. I'm Simon, and when a maker this good commits to solid oak and traditional joinery, the piece earns its place here every time.
This is a double wardrobe, traditional in the best sense. Two full-height doors, one wide drawer at the base, and every inch of it built from solid oak. The frame, the doors, the drawer fronts, all of it. The kind of construction that takes a room from clothes piled on a chair to a bedroom that works. Hanging space behind the doors for coats and shirts, a deep drawer below for folded pieces, and the whole thing sitting on a shaped plinth base that lifts it just clear of the floor. Crown moulding at the top, round black metal knobs at every pull point, and a medium oak finish that shows the grain without shouting about it.
Here is what matters. Dovetail joints hold the drawer together, so it runs true and stays square no matter how many times it gets opened and slammed shut. Tongue and groove panelling lines the back and the drawer base, which is the detail that separates furniture that lasts from furniture that sags and splits. Solid oak all the way through means this can be sanded, refinished, handed down. It improves rather than wearing out.
And this is the part that solves the actual problem most wardrobes create. The upper section, the part with the doors, can be completely dismantled if you need it to be. The wardrobe already splits into two main sections, but if your stairs are tight, your hallway is narrow, or your bedroom door is the size of a cat flap, you can take the top apart even further. Get it through the gap, rebuild it in the room, and it stands exactly as solid as it did before. That is the kind of thinking that only shows up in furniture built to live somewhere for decades.
The condition is pre-owned with a bit of character, minor signs of wear, still in great nick.
