This bed frame turned up through a contact who knows what I look for, and the Gothic arches and fluted columns told me it had earned its place. Reclaimed old pine, carved panels, and a silhouette that belongs in a period house rather than a flat-pack catalogue. It is here now, and it is one of a kind.
The arches are what make it. Pointed Gothic details carved into each panel, three across the headboard, three across the footboard, with fluted columns standing at each post and topped with carved capitals. The sort of thing you see in chapel woodwork or old libraries, translated here into a king-size bed frame that takes up space with purpose. The reclaimed pine carries the warm honeyed tone that only comes from timber that has lived one life already, and the grain runs deep and visible across every surface.
Barker and Stonehouse built this piece, and the construction is what you expect from them. Traditional dovetail joints where the frame meets, a slatted base that sits solid and true, and the kind of presence that tells you someone took time over it. The timber itself is reclaimed old pine, so every plank brings its own texture, its own variation in tone, its own history pressed into the grain. That is the point of reclaimed wood. It does not pretend to be new. It wears its past openly, and the bed looks better for it.
The medium-tone finish brings out the warmth in the pine without drowning it in stain. You see the knots, the variation in colour, the places where the grain shifts direction. That is reclaimed timber doing what it does best. The condition is pre-owned and in great condition, with a few honest imperfections. The bed has had a minor repair to one of the slats, which has now been fully resolved. There are also a number of light scratches to the footboard, consistent with normal wear and tear. However, given the nature of the reclaimed old pine, these marks sit naturally within the character of the timber and, if anything, add to the bed's authentic, timeworn charm. This is furniture that has lived a little, and it shows no shame in that.
