The lower catches are missing on the doors. Not broken off, just gone. This means the doors push slightly further in at the bottom than they should. The upper catches still do their job, so the doors close perfectly well, and the wardrobe works exactly as intended. It was this detail that told me what I needed to know. The piece was used, priced honestly for exactly what it is, and still worth buying. I'm Simon. I source second-hand furniture from premium UK brands one piece at a time, based here in Houghton-le-Spring. This double wardrobe from Barker and Stonehouse earned its place the moment I saw the carved arches across the door panels and the way the whole thing dismantles for moving. Those two facts alone make it worth the conversation.
The build is traditional in every sense. Dovetail joints hold the drawers together, tongue and groove panelling backs the piece and lines the drawer bases. The material is reclaimed wood throughout, and that means visible grain, knots, and a natural variation in tone that gives the wardrobe its character. The finish is a medium wood colour, warm and consistent, letting the texture do the talking. The carved gothic arches on the upper door panels are the detail that sets this apart. Paired with circular keyhole escutcheons and traditional metal drop handles on the drawers, the whole design leans into its rustic roots without tipping into pastiche.
Storage is straightforward. Two large doors open to a full-height hanging compartment. Below that, four equal-sized drawers in two rows give you enclosed space for folded clothes, bedding, or anything else that needs putting away. The shaped cornice across the top adds visual weight without crowding the room, and the proportions work in bedrooms where you want presence but not bulk.
Then there is the practical genius of how it comes apart. Despite being a substantial piece, this wardrobe dismantles down to something close to flat-pack. The top lifts off. The back can be removed. The front and side sections fold in before the main body lifts away from the base. This is a huge advantage if you are moving into a home with narrow doorways, tight staircases, or rooms where a one-piece wardrobe simply will not fit. You get all the storage and all the presence of a large double wardrobe, without the headache of trying to manoeuvre one enormous piece of furniture through your hallway. For anyone who has ever had to abandon a perfectly good wardrobe on a landing because it would not make the turn, this feature alone is worth reading twice.
The condition is second-hand and in great condition, with a few honest imperfections. There are some light scuff marks here and there, consistent with general use. The lower catches on the doors are missing, so the doors can push slightly further in at the bottom than they normally would, but the upper catches are still in place and the doors close perfectly well. The wardrobe has been priced to reflect these points. My second-hand price is £195. If you're interested, I'm also selling separately a king-size bed frame in the same style.
