The two large doors open onto shelves deep enough to hold dinner sets, glassware, serving platters, the lot. Panelled, solid, hung on heavy-duty hinges. Then the five drawers, stacked in a central column with a logic that makes you want to fill them. This is not a sideboard designed to look good empty. It is built to work, and it looks brilliant doing it.
I'm Simon, and most pieces I turn down because they are either overpriced or underdone. Then something like this arrives and I know it's worth sharing. Barker and Stonehouse originally sold this as part of their French oak range, and you can see the pedigree in every joint. This is reclaimed oak, which means every plank carries its own grain, its own knots, its own small marks. That variation is the point. It gives the piece a warmth and depth that factory-flat oak simply does not have.
The build is traditional farmhouse, done properly. Two cupboards, one either side, each with an adjustable shelf inside. The central section holds three medium drawers stacked above two smaller ones at the base. The dovetail joints on those drawers are exactly what you want to see: tight, square, built to stay that way long term. Cheap units use staples or dowels. This uses the method that lasts.
The oak is finished in a medium tone that lets the grain show through, matte rather than glossy, with a texture you notice when you run a hand across it. The handles are simple black metal rings, understated, functional, the sort that suit the piece rather than shouting over it. The top sits flat and generous, solid enough to hold lamps, bowls, bottles, whatever the room needs. A decorative moulded cornice runs along the top edge, and the base has a slightly recessed plinth that lifts the whole thing just enough to give it presence without making it heavy.
The condition is PreLoved and in great condition, with a few honest imperfections. The body of the sideboard appears to have been exposed to direct sunlight at some point, resulting in a very slight variation in colour compared with some of the other sections. Oak naturally changes in tone over time, particularly when exposed to sunlight, and this is a good example of that natural ageing process. The difference is quite subtle and not particularly noticeable in everyday use. Being a rustic reclaimed oak piece, it already has natural variations, marks and imperfections that form part of its character, so the slight colour difference blends in well with the overall look. As always, for complete transparency, I like to make potential customers aware of anything I notice, no matter how minor.

This sold new for £1,600. It is here for £175. That is 89% off a piece built to last decades. The saving alone pays for a decent dining table. Furniture of this build quality costs several times this price bought new.
Storage like this solves the problem most dining rooms and kitchens have, which is that crockery, cutlery, table linen and serving ware accumulate faster than cupboard space. Two shelved cupboards and five drawers give you options. You can arrange the contents by type, by occasion, by whoever uses them. The piece adapts to how you live, rather than the other way round.
Reclaimed oak brings character that new oak has to wait years to earn. The knots, the grain shifts, the small marks, they are all part of what makes this material worth using. It is honest, warm, built to last, and it improves with use rather than wearing out.
