Most weeks I pass on more than I buy. Then a mirror like this surfaces and the case is clear. Barker and Stonehouse, reclaimed wood, that Gothic-pointed arch carved across the top, and a drawer that actually works underneath. It made the cut, and now it is here. I'm Simon, and I spend half my time ruling things out. This one got the nod in about thirty seconds.
Barker and Stonehouse do traditional well, and this piece is proof. The frame is reclaimed wood, left light and natural so the grain shows through properly. The arch is pointed, Gothic-inspired, with carved pinnacles standing either side of the mirror's upper edge. You get the shape of something from a chapel hall, minus the dust and the Latin. That carved moulding runs around the drawer front too, which sits on a solid base at floor level. Open it and you will find proper dovetail joints holding the drawer together. Details like that tell you how seriously this was built in the first place.
The mirror itself is tall, clear, and mounted to last. The drawer gives you somewhere to stash keys, post, the clutter that piles up by the door or the bedroom. One metal handle, classic shape, pulls open smoothly. The base is wide enough that the whole thing stands steady without fixing to the wall, and at 175 cm tall it gives you a full view before you leave the house. No wobble. No lean. Sorted.
The condition is PreLoved with a bit of character, minor signs of wear, still in great nick. You are looking at reclaimed wood that has lived a little, which is the entire reason it looks this good.
My PreLoved price is £145. A free-standing mirror from Barker and Stonehouse, carved detail, a working drawer, and reclaimed wood with the grain on show. Furniture built this well costs several times this price bought new from retailers of this standard, and rightly so. That is £145 for something solid, useful, and handsome, and it will not hang around at that figure for long.
