Then a piece like this surfaces and the numbers do the talking. This is Laura Ashley's Garrat chest of drawers, and it stopped being available new some time ago. Anyone building or completing a Garrat bedroom knows exactly what that means. The search narrows fast when the maker stops making it. This one turned up, I checked it over, and now it is here. Ten drawers, split across two columns. Six smaller ones down the left for socks, belts, whatever needs sorting. Four larger ones down the right for jumpers, jeans, the bulkier stuff. That split is the whole point of the layout. You store small things small and big things big, and nothing gets lost at the back of a drawer that is too deep for the job.
Solid birch and birch veneer throughout, finished in a dark chestnut stain that brings out the grain without burying it. The wood has weight and warmth, and the tone sits comfortably in most bedrooms without fighting for attention. The handles tell you something about the design: round knobs on the smaller drawers, drop handles on the larger ones, all fixed to decorative metal backplates. Functional, but not plain.
Laura Ashley's Garrat range is still in production, but this chest is not. That makes it the only way to add this exact piece to an existing set, or to start one if you have been waiting for the right price. New Garrat pieces hold their value. My second hand price is £295, and at that price it is unlikely to hang around.
The condition is second hand with a bit of character, minor signs of wear, still in great nick. It has been used, and it shows in small ways, but nothing that stops it doing its job or looking good doing it.
