Barker and Stonehouse build furniture that does its work quietly and for decades. This double wardrobe is proof. Two full-width doors open onto a hanging rail wide enough for coats, suits and everything in between. Below that, a wide drawer adds the kind of storage that keeps a bedroom floor clear instead of becoming a depository for things with nowhere else to go. Medium oak throughout, so the grain does the decorating and the finish stays warm without needing paint to carry it.
The panelled door fronts give the piece its traditional bearing without drifting into fuss. Clean lines, a slightly extended top edge that adds definition, and construction details that separate quality furniture from flat-pack approximations. The back is tongue and groove panelling, not hardboard. The drawer base is tongue and groove, not a sheet of something that will sag under winter jumpers. The joints are traditional dovetails, which means the drawer stays square no matter how many years it gets opened and closed. Those construction choices do not feature in catalogue copy, but they are the reason one wardrobe outlasts three cheaper replacements.
