Six rounded black metal knobs, set against solid oak that carries all the warmth of honey in good light. Each one sits exactly where your hand wants to land. They do not pull loose. They do not twist. They have done this job before and they will do it again. I am Simon, and when a piece like this turns up from Barker and Stonehouse, built with traditional joinery and finished to a standard this high, it earns its place here without question.
This is a six-drawer chest: four smaller drawers stacked in two rows at the top for folded knitwear, undergarments, accessories, whatever needs sorting but not burying, then two deeper drawers beneath for bulkier items. Storage arranged to suit how people actually live, not how catalogues imagine it. The timber is solid oak throughout, and you know it the moment you open a drawer. The grain runs true, the colour stays even, and every surface has been cut and finished with care.
Barker and Stonehouse built this piece with traditional dovetail joints, the interlocking finger construction that holds drawers square under load and prevents racking over time. Tongue and groove panelling lines the back of the chest and the base of each drawer, solid timber fitted into channels rather than hardboard tacked into place. These are not details you notice on day one. They are the reason the chest still stands square on day three thousand.
The finish is a light to medium natural oak tone that lets the timber speak for itself. No heavy stain, no attempt to darken it into something it is not. The grain shows, the warmth comes through, and the piece sits well in rooms where natural light moves across the day. Crown moulding finishes the top edge, a detail that lifts the piece beyond plain utility, and the shaped base carries a slight recessed detail that gives the whole thing a considered, grounded presence. This is furniture designed to look right in a bedroom and stay right for years.
Barker and Stonehouse are known for building furniture to last, and this chest is proof of that standard. Solid oak can be sanded and refinished, so surface wear is never terminal. The joinery holds. The drawers run. The timber ages without collapsing. Furniture of this build quality costs several times this price bought new. My pre-owned price is £225.
The condition is pre-owned and in great condition, with a few honest imperfections. There is just one very minor imperfection to the chest of drawers. On the top, towards the left hand side, there is a tiny mark which is only really visible in certain lighting. It is very subtle, but as always, for complete transparency, I like to make potential customers aware of any imperfections I notice. Please see the photographs for a closer look. Viewings are more than welcome, and I am confident you would not be disappointed if you came to see it in person.
