Barker And Stonehouse Kimberley Second Hand King-size Solid Oak Bed Frame

Those slats running vertical up the headboard and footboard, evenly spaced, each one set flush to the next. That uniformity is not just for show. It signals a frame built to square tolerances, where alignment matters and every piece of timber sits true. A slatted headboard like this one stops a room feeling heavy, and a bedroom is the last place you want visual weight. This one landed on the site because Barker and Stonehouse do not build frames that buckle or creak, and a king-size Kimberley at this price is a rarity worth acting on. I'm Simon, and when a piece like this from a maker this trusted turns up at a fraction of what it would cost new, I do not leave it on the van for long.

The slats are solid oak, the same as the frame itself, and solid oak in a bed frame does the one job you cannot fake: it stays silent under load and it stays square over time. No twisting, no sagging, no discovering six months in that the rails have worked loose because the joinery was never up to the task in the first place. This frame uses traditional dovetail joints, which means the structure locks together mechanically, timber to timber, no relying on glue or screws alone. You do not see the dovetails once the bed is dressed, but you feel the result every time you sit on the edge or shift position at night. A frame that does not move is a frame you stop noticing, and that is the sign it is doing its work.

The headboard stands tall enough to lean back against without your pillows sliding off the top, and the footboard gives the frame visual balance without cutting across the sightline when you walk into the room. Both are built from the same vertical slat design, so the frame reads as one coherent piece rather than a collection of separate panels. The finish is a medium oak tone, warm rather than orange, with the grain running visible through the surface. It sits in the middle ground: not too dark, not too pale, which means it plays well with most bedroom palettes without demanding the room be designed around it.

The legs are square section, chunky enough to look planted rather than fragile, and the proportions across the whole frame feel deliberate. No fussy details, no carving, no attempt to be anything other than a solid, well-made king-size bed. If you have been looking at flat-pack frames that wobble the moment you tighten the bolts, or metal frames that transmit every shift and creak straight into the mattress, this is the alternative. Timber that has actual substance, joints that do not rely on cam locks, and a design that will not look tired in three years because it was never chasing a trend in the first place.

My second hand price is £195. Barker and Stonehouse furniture of this standard costs several times that bought new from their showrooms, so you are looking at genuine quality at a price that leaves the rest of your bedroom budget intact. The condition is second hand with a bit of character, minor signs of wear, still in great nick. This is a bed frame that has been slept in and it shows no structural faults, no damage to the slats or rails, nothing that affects how it performs. The wear is surface level and entirely in keeping with a piece that has done the job it was built for.

Only one of this frame exists. £30 secures it. Once it is gone, it is gone. At this price, for a king-size from Barker and Stonehouse in solid oak, it will not sit here waiting.
